Following the mission of environmental organizations, the Khakassky Reserve provides protection of its areas, conducts research studies, and contributes to preservation of cultural and historical heritage of the Republic of Khakassia.

One of the areas protected by the Khakassky Reserve—the Oglahty Range—has thousands of ancient rock paintings engraved and painted on the rock outcrops and rock fragments. The Oglahty petroglyphs represent all cultural and chronological periods determined in the ancient art of Khakassia.

To provide better preservation and bring international attention to rock art in Khakassia, it was decided to submit a nomination proposal on including the Oglahty Range on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. It took almost a year to prepare the necessary documentation for nomination. The whole process consists of two main steps: first—inclusion in a Tentative List (requires the approval from regional and national authorities); second—inclusion in a World Heritage List (requires inspection and evaluation of the area by UNESCO’s experts, and preparation of the nomination file that includes the necessary documentation and maps).

Recently, the Khakassky Reserve received a letter signed by the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, confirming that the Oglahty Range has been included in the UNESCO’s Tentative List meaning that the area became a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The Oglahty Range is the only area in Khakassia receiving such status, and one of the 4 areas in Russia nominated under both cultural and natural criteria (from 22 nominated sites in Russia).

The next year will be devoted to preparation of the nomination file, which demands the hard work of many experts and regional institutions.

Inclusion in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List means international acknowledgment of cultural and natural value of the area. Such status provides wide opportunities for a region in development of education, culture, science, nature conservation and tourism.

The Khakassky Reserve’s team thanks everyone who helped to prepare the nomination documentation and expresses hope for future cooperation.
