Annual estimation of berry productivity started in August and was finished in early September, 2016.

The researchers estimated productivity of cowberries and bilberries in 5 locations of the Khakassky Reserve’s Maly Abakan area. The following characteristics were checked: the total number of shoots, number of reproductive shoots, number of berries on a reproductive shoot, and weight of 100 berries. At the moment, the data is being processed.

The preliminary results indicate that bilberry productivity remained at the same level as in previous years, while cowberry showed zero productivity in some areas. Reasons for that are, probably, late spring frosts during the cowberry blooming period, and late summer hailstorms that knocked berries off the shrubs. The researchers also noticed a second blooming period of cowberries during the season. One of the consequences of late blooming is that, if a growing season extends to first frosts, the plant may not get ready for the winter.

The researchers also estimated cedar forest condition in 8 locations near the Tartash, Uzun, and Karasuma guard posts. Monitoring the forest health state includes visual inspection of trunks, barks, branches and needles to identify possible fungal diseases, tree pests, and other problems. Such estimations allow researchers to identify what causes trees to die off.

The preliminary results showed that cedar forest productivity remained at the same high level as before. The researchers estimated the needle longevity, weight, length, and crown characteristics. They also collected samples of needles and soil to estimate the pollution level in the area (coniferous trees are sensitive to changes in air composition). The samples will be delivered to the Khakasskaya Agrochemical Agency to analyze the concentration of fluorine and heavy metals.
