Full-size copies of rock drawings in Oglahty Mountains

08.09.2016

Oglahty Mountains

Oglahty Mountains

Work on the project “Study and protection of ancient rock drawings (Oglahty Mountain Range, Khakassia)” sponsored by the Russian Geographical Society is continuing.

Coastal cliffs of the Yenisey River near the Oglahty Mountains are covered with ancient drawings that belong to various cultures. Decades ago, when the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir was created, the cliffs were submerged, and several hundreds of ancient drawings and other archaeological sites were destroyed.

The archaeologists from the Kemerovo Oblast intend to find new petroglyphs that has not been discovered yet, and create an atlas of objects that represent historical and cultural heritage of the Oglahty Mountains area.

Most rock drawings located near the water in the eastern part of the mountain range will be soon lost because of water erosion. “We have been monitoring the rock drawings in that area since 1990s. Every year from 2 to 4 petroglyphs are destroyed, ” said Elena Miklashevich, a vice president of the Siberian Association of Prehistoric Art Researchers.

The procedure of creating a copy is the following: each rock drawing is cleaned from lichens and covered with methylcellulose. Then the painting is covered with special silicone material. The silicone is then firmly fixed for a few hours until the mold gets firm. After that, the silicone mold is peeled off the rock and can be used to make exact copies of the rock drawing.

By the end of the project implementation, the researchers will make 10 full-size copies of ancient rock drawings, and publish an atlas of objects that belong to historical and cultural heritage of the Oglahty Mountains. The copies of rock drawings will be finished by October; after that they will be displayed as part of a museum exhibition.

Annual berry productivity estimation in taiga areas of Khakassky Reserve

06.09.2016

Maly Abakan area

Annual estimation of berry productivity started in August and was finished in early September, 2016.

The researchers estimated productivity of cowberries and bilberries in 5 locations of the Khakassky Reserve’s Maly Abakan area. The following characteristics were checked: the total number of shoots, number of reproductive shoots, number of berries on a reproductive shoot, and weight of 100 berries. At the moment, the data is being processed.

Berry productivity estimation

Berry productivity estimation

The preliminary results indicate that bilberry productivity remained at the same level as in previous years, while cowberry showed zero productivity in some areas. Reasons for that are, probably, late spring frosts during the cowberry blooming period, and late summer hailstorms that knocked berries off the shrubs. The researchers also noticed a second blooming period of cowberries during the season. One of the consequences of late blooming is that, if a growing season extends to first frosts, the plant may not get ready for the winter.

The researchers also estimated cedar forest condition in 8 locations near the Tartash, Uzun, and Karasuma guard posts. Monitoring the forest health state includes visual inspection of trunks, barks, branches and needles to identify possible fungal diseases, tree pests, and other problems. Such estimations allow researchers to identify what causes trees to die off.

Measuring berries for productivity estimation

Measuring berries for productivity estimation

The preliminary results showed that cedar forest productivity remained at the same high level as before. The researchers estimated the needle longevity, weight, length, and crown characteristics. They also collected samples of needles and soil to estimate the pollution level in the area (coniferous trees are sensitive to changes in air composition). The samples will be delivered to the Khakasskaya Agrochemical Agency to analyze the concentration of fluorine and heavy metals.
