Strategy for Development of Educational Tourism in Federally Protected Areas until 2020 will be approved in 2016

Eco-tourism in Russia and protected areas: present and future

After some improvements, a draft of the strategy was approved by the Expert Council on Protected Areas under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation. It was announced at a round table discussion by Vsevolod Stepanitskiy, a deputy head of the Department of State Policy and Regulations in the Sphere of Environmental Conservation.

The discussion titled “Eco-tourism in Russia and protected areas: present and future” was held within the International Exhibition and Forum ECOTECH on April 29th, 2016.

In his report, Vsevolod Stepanitskiy mentioned that for the past 5 years, a lot has been done to develop educational tourism in federally protected areas. Most issues relating to educational tourism were resolved by amendments to the existing legislation.

Earlier, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment worked out a Concept of Development of Federally Protected Area System until 2020. In the Concept, educational tourism is viewed as one of the main directions of state nature reserves and national parks development in Russia. “Opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat is a key element of environmental education that promotes nature conservation and support for protected areas. It is a strong foundation that can provide additional guarantees for wildlife protection,” reported Vsevolod Stepanitskiy.

To achieve the aims, a number of tasks needs to be carried out. This includes strategic and medium-term planning of development for each reserve and national park, creation and renovation of infrastructure, designing a marketing plan, and providing information support. Besides, it is necessary to provide professional training for environmental specialists, and strengthen cooperation between state organizations that regulate protected areas, tour operators and other organizations.

Today, 67 protected areas in Russia have agreements with tour operators and agencies for provision of tourist services. Some of them received certificates to be included in the Uniform Federal Register of the Tour Operators of the Federal Agency for Tourism. Another 11 protected areas took a voluntary certification of their tourist products and received certificates of conformity to standards. Specialists from protected areas participate in special training seminars and internship programs where they can adopt best international practices in environmental tourism services.

Vsevolod Stepanitskiy pointed out that educational tourism demonstrates the important role of nature reserves and national parks in biodiversity and landscape conservation, preservation of natural and cultural heritage, as well as their role in social and economic development of the regions. “The complex of activities will provide support for protected areas as part of the common national heritage,” summed up Vsevolod Stepanitskiy.

Green Spring—2016 campaign for Victory Day

29.04.2016

Are you ready for the spring?

Green Spring is a title of a spring clean-up campaign held on April 20th by the Khakassky Reserve, Abaza Museum of Local Lore and History, and Fire-Fighting Service Department #6 of Abaza.

The campaign was held as part of events marking the 71st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. It brought together 127 participants, including representatives of the organizers, teachers, and volunteers: schoolchildren from schools #50 and #49, and a fire brigade of young volunteers.

Spring clean-up

The meeting started with a speech from Olga Filimonenko, a specialist of the Khakassky Reserve’s Environmental Education Department, and Oksana Khurtina, an instructor on fire-prevention measures of the Fire-Fighting Service Department #6. They underlined the importance of the campaign and said that such events promote development of ecological culture and social responsibility of young people.

The area for the clean-up is the place where more than 400 people from Abaza were leaving for the war service in 1941–1945, as it was mentioned by Nina Andriyasheva, a head of the Abaza Museum of Local Lore and History, and Tatiana Lisyonkova, a specialist of the museum. The participants also cleaned up the area around the monument to fallen workers in the Civil War.

Green Spring—2016

As part of preparation for the campaign, the children had drawn posters with slogans “Thanks for the Victory”, “Green Spring—2016”, “I Love my Planet”, and “Clean Up the Nature”. The cloudy and windy weather did not stop them from cleaning up the area around the museum, Naberezhnaya street, and banks of the Abakan River. The children also colored the monument and road curbs, and whitewashed the trees.

After the work was done, everyone gathered at the museum hall for a tea party. The organizers of the Green Spring—2016 campaign thank all participants and invite them to expositions on city anniversary at the Abaza Museum of Local Lore and History.
