International environmental campaign March for Parks—2017 will be held under the motto “100 Years of Protected Areas in Russia”.

The first Russian state nature reserve—Barguzinsky—was established 100 years ago near Lake Baikal. Since then, the protected areas have undergone much change. There were hard times: fighting against poachers, reorganization, lack of funding, and privatization of state enterprises. But main environmental ideas helped to move forward. These ideas were developed by outstanding conservationists, naturalists and scientists who devoted their lives to study and protection of nature and its diversity.

Protected areas are the greatest assets of the country and its citizens. Such pieces of pristine nature protected from human influence are necessary for people to survive and achieve sustainable future from learning about natural processes. Over the years, scientists have collected data; and thanks to this information they can estimate human influence on ecosystems and its components, and design methods for eliminating such influence.

The main goals of the March for Parks campaign are to draw attention of authorities, mass media, businesses and public to environmental problems of the region, tell about nature reserves, national parks and our natural and cultural heritage.

Every year thousands participants in the Republic of Khakassia join the campaign. Khakassky Reserve has prepared a Statute of March for Parks—2017 that describes the details of contests held within the campaign:

  • Save Protected Nature poster contest. A poster should demonstrate the beauty, importance, and peculiarities of depicted protected area; and include short and meaningful slogan related to environmental problem of the area.
  • If I Were Head of Nature Reserve essay contest. Authors are asked to describe what they would do if they became head of a protected area. They should also tell about the reasons why they think the proposed changes are necessary.

For more information, see the Statute of March for Parks—2017 (in Russian).
