International Snow Leopard Day in Khakassky Reserve

23.10.2015

Young cat lovers

The International Snow Leopard Day is celebrated on October 23rd. The holiday was established in 2013 at the Global Snow Leopard Conservation Forum in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan). The idea to celebrate the holiday was supported by 12 countries where snow leopards are found: Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan.

The population of snow leopard is estimated at 3.5-7.5 thousand species, and only 200 species inhabit Russian lands. Every year researches organize expeditions to study the wild cat.

Heroes of the day

The Khakassky Reserve’s team and Sayan—Khakassia Hockey Club have prepared a program of Snow Leopard Day celebration. They invited students of the Saint Innokenty of Moscow Orthodox Gymnasium, Khakass State University and other reserve’s friends to participate in the event.

Two heroes of the day—life-size puppets of snow leopards—amused and entertained the participants. Little participants were invited to face paint a snow leopard. Then the newly born “snow leopard population” was “registered” by a camera trap. At the quiz, the participants demonstrated how much they know about snow leopards: they answered the questions without hesitation. Then everyone participated in a dance flashmob in honour of the wild cat. And at the end of the Snow Leopard Day, the participants released colorful balloons into the air and had a tea party.

Dance flashmob

The Khakassky Reserve’s team wants to thank all participants for celebrating the Snow Leopard Day with us. Thanks to you more people can learn about the unique wild cat and keep it from becoming extinct.

For information:

Snow leopards have symbolic meaning for many peoples of Central Asia. It is widely used in heraldry and as an emblem. A snow leopard is found on the official seal of Almaty (Kazakhstan), mythical winged snow leopard is found in the coat of arms of Khakassia and Tatarstan. The animal is also featured in a series of commemorative coins.

Participants of celebration

In Soviet Union very experienced climbers received a Snow Leopard mountaineering award. To receive the award, a climber must summit all five peaks of 7 thousand meters and above located in the former Soviet Union.

Hockey clubs Ak Bars (Kazan) and Barys (Astana) are named after the wild cat. This year snow leopard has become a symbol of Sayan—Khakassia Hockey Club.
