Scientific and Technical Council of Khakassky Reserve discussed plans for the year 2018.

As before, main activities will include protection of the area, providing fire prevention activities, regular estimation of wildlife populations, monitoring the rare and endangered species, environmental monitoring, environmental education activities, and development of educational tourism.

All departments of the reserve intend to keep the bar high and improve certain indicators compared to the last year through innovations and changes.

For example, the Research Department starts to work on dedicated nature chronicles of Pozarym Wildlife Refuge (earlier, all records had been included in the Khakassky Reserve’s nature chronicles in separate chapters and appendices). “This decision came out naturally, following the results of numerous expeditions that have been undertaken in the past several years by the reserve’s and invited specialists,” stated Viktoria Shurkina, the Khakassky Reserve’s deputy director for research.

Besides, the Research Department identified new priority areas: they include study of ecology and biology of Siberian musk deer and complex research on changes in natural ecosystems of Uybat steppe.

The main goal of the Environmental Education Department and Tourism Department is to continue development of the Pozarym environmental and educational complex as a tourist center of the Southern Siberia. Work on creation of a brand book for the protected area has already started. Besides, it is planned to design and test new tourist tours, and continue the construction and decoration of the informational platforms and visitor center.

In 2018, the Lake Itkul area of the Khakassky Reserve will host a divers festival. “We have been receiving requests to organize this kind of festival for several years. We hope the event will be enjoyable, exciting and memorable. If everything goes according to the plan, Lake Itkul will become a perfect place for diving activities, and will attract divers from all over the country,” shared Natalia Tairova, a deputy director for environmental education of Khakassky Reserve.

At the end of the meeting, the participants had a presentation of a new book titled “Oglahty Rock Carvings”. The book is a result of studies carried out by the reserve’s specialists and experts in history and archeology from the Republic of Khakassia and Kemerovo Oblast.

Yury Esin—author of the book and permanent member of the Scientific and Technical Council—was presented a set of books and a letter of appreciation from the Khakass branch of the Russian Geographical Society for personal contribution in the project implementation and participation in preserving the rock carvings in the Oglahty Mountains.

After the Scientific and Technical Council approved the plans for 2018, Victor Nepomnyaschy thanked all participants for their contribution and wished everyone a successful year.
