Specialists from the Khakassky Reserve launched the project titled “Study and protection of ancient rock drawings (Oglahty Mountain Range, Khakassia)”. The project is sponsored by the Russian Geographical Society.

Oglahty has the largest collection of rock drawings in the Republic of Khakassia. The paintings are 6 thousand years old. But after the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir was created, the coastal cliffs of the Yenisey River were submerged, and several hundreds of ancient drawings were destroyed.

The participants of the “Study and protection of ancient rock drawings” project intend to preserve and popularize the ancient art as important part of historical and cultural heritage of Khakassia. Preservation of ancient art, at least through copies, allows the specialists to study and reconstruct the history of these areas.

The project brought together archaeologists from the Republic of Khakassia and Kemerovo Oblast. They have already studied the coastal cliffs and defined the areas with preserved paintings. At the end of the month, the archaeologists from the Kemerovo State University will start making plastic copies of the found art objects.

The method of preserving the archaeological objects in the form of plastic copies was designed and introduced in some European countries and the USA. For example, such copies of historical artifacts are displayed in the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology (Monaco). In Russia, the method was used in 2005 to make copies of rock drawings found near the Pegtymel River (Chukotka Autonomous Okrug).

At the end of the study, the scientists will publish an atlas of the Oglahty rock drawings, and create a database with information about the found paintings. The exact copies will be displayed in a traveling exhibition that will include the most representative pieces of the collection.
