Natural conditions that determine a rich diversity of species and landscapes make is possible to divide the Khakassky Reserve’s areas into two groups: steppe and mountain taiga.
I. STEPPE GROUP includes 7 areas:
- Lake Shira area (1,397 hectares)
- Lake Itkul area (5,547 hectares)
- Lake Bele area (5,285 hectares)
- Oglahty area (2,590 hectares)
- Kamyzyaksky steppe and Lake Ulug-Kol area (4,789 hectares)
- Hol–Bogaz area (2,499 hectares)
- Podzaploty area (5,181 hectares)
II. MOUNTAIN TAIGA GROUP includes 2 areas located in medium and high mountain part of the northern macroslope of the Western Sayan Mountains:
- Maly Abakan area (97,829 hectares)
- Zaimka Lykovykh area (142,441 hectares)
